Experienced professionals possess extensive professional, project and leadership experience, which is of great strategic value to companies. At the same time, jobseekers face particular challenges when making career transitions, as digital selection procedures and standardised application processes often fail to adequately reflect complex career histories. As a result, valuable experience and skills often remain unseen, even though they are relevant to many companies. Particularly in restructuring and outplacement scenarios, this makes it difficult to place experienced professionals quickly and accurately in new career opportunities.
This is where CareerXplore comes in. The project is being implemented as part of the XAI Studio in collaboration with Senior Connect GmbH. The XAI Studio is supported by the Institute for Business Analytics (IBA) at Ulm University and the Institute for Management Information Systems at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The aim of CareerXplore is to design, develop and scientifically evaluate an explanatory, AI-supported career explorer that supports jobseekers in their career reorientation. The career explorer guides users in reflecting on their experiences and skills, discovering new career prospects and making informed decisions about their future career development.
To this end, the project combines modern methods of artificial intelligence, explainable AI (XAI) and human-AI interaction. Based on individual skills profiles, the Career Explorer supports the joint exploration and reflection on career options, highlights connections between past experiences and new requirements, and enables the interactive exploration of alternative career paths. This gives users a better understanding of their individual strengths, potential for development and new career prospects.
By combining exploration, explainability and human-AI interaction, the project aims to reinforce jobseekers’ self-efficacy, improve the quality of career decisions and support the development of new career prospects. In the long term, the project aims to help promote the integration of experienced skilled workers into the labour market and to link existing skills more effectively with the needs of the labour market.

The project aims to gain insights into how explainable AI and human-AI interaction can be used to support career reorientation. To this end, the project will examine how an AI-based career explorer can support the exploration of career options, reflection on individual competencies, and informed decision-making. In addition, the project aims to derive design principles for transparent, interactive, and user-centered AI systems that can be applied to other areas of labor market integration and outplacement.
