bwCloud-OS Gen3

Service Category: Server & Datacenter

bwCloud OpenStack (bwCloud-OS) Gen3 is a federated state service based on the virtualisation software OpenStack with operator locations in Mannheim, Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Ulm. It provides virtual machines (servers) to members of teaching and research institutions in the state by way of self-provisioning and without a lengthy application process (Infrastructure as a Service - IaaS).

Images of common operating systems are available for the virtual machines, with which a basic installation can be easily put into operation. As the administrator of the virtual machines, the user can then make adjustments to the respective requirements and install application software on his or her own responsibility.

Performance features

  • Self-Service Portal: Web-based access to the administration of one's own resources in bwCloud SCOPE (OpenStack Dashboard).
  • VM Image Repository: Provision of images of common operating systems (currently exclusively various Linux distributions for all users as well as Windows Server for all members of the University of Ulm) with which a basic installation can be put into operation.
  • Configuration of virtual machine instances with regard to different performance requirements (VCPUs, RAM, fixed storage).
  • Use of fixed storage in the form of volumes that can be provisioned and attached to virtual machines.
  • Connectivity to the public network for access to virtual machines and provisioning of services on virtual machines.
  • Definition of security group rules for virtual machines (release and blocking of ports and port ranges for specific IP ranges).
  • Interactive access to the virtual machines via SSH (incl. X11 forwarding), web VNC console in the dashboard or via operating system-specific remote access protocols (e.g. RDP)
  • Secure authentication with a user-generated SSH key pair

User groups

Members of the University of Ulm for tasks in research, teaching and study as well as members of other educational institutions in Baden-Württemberg. The service is not designed for the operation of business-critical applications with high availability.

Service hours

24 x 7 x 365

Central parts of the infrastructure of this service are operated outside the Ulm site, e.g. the Identity Service (Keystone) at the University of Freiburg. Restrictions in the operation of these services also affect the availability of the Ulm site.

Information on downtime and scheduled maintenance is provided on the project page:

Entitlements and IDM

To register with bwCloud-OS Gen3, users require both an access entitlement and a quota entitlement.

All students and staff at the University of Ulm should already have been automatically issued with an access entitlement for bwCloud-OS Gen3.

Students are automatically issued with the quota entitlement “xmedium_1”.

To gain access to a bwCloud-OS Gen3 quota entitlement as a staff member, you must first subscribe to the optional service ‘Personal bwCloud Access’ (under ‘Optional Services’) via Identity Management (IDM Frontend) and assign it to a cost centre of your choice:

The person responsible for the cost centre (if applicable) must approve this request. You will then be allocated the quota entitlement “xlarge_1”. You will receive an email confirmation.

If no person in charge has yet been entered for the cost centre, but there is in principle someone who should take on this role, please contact IDM Support (not bwCloud Support) via KIX / Helpdesk regarding this matter.

You can view your entitlements in Identity Management under ‘Data Mirror’. The following entitlements should now be listed there:

urn:geant::bwidm:bwcloud-os:access
urn:geant::bwidm:bwcloud-os:group:xlarge_1:<Kostenstelle>

You can find the meaning of ‘quota entitlements’ here:

Custom Quota Entitlement for Special Projects

If "xlarge_1" is not sufficient for your use case, the IDM also offers the option of obtaining a "custom" quota entitlement via "Custom bwCloud-OS (Gen3) access" (separate application process) under the optional services:

urn:geant::bwidm:bwcloud-os:group:custom:<Kostenstelle>

Gruppenprojekte) beantragen:

Students do not receive a ‘custom’ quota entitlement, and therefore are not eligible for quota increases or special projects. Instead, supervisors of research or teaching modules with a ‘custom’ quota entitlement must apply for special projects and, where necessary, register students as additional users of these projects.

Registrierung am Dienst bwCloud-OS Gen3

If you have access and quota entitlements, you can register and log in to the bwCloud-OS Gen3 dashboard using “bwIDM via OpenID Connect”:

If a message appears during login stating that attributes have changed, please consent to the sharing of this information (entitlements).

If the initial login fails with ‘Error 401’, please try logging in again using a private browser tab.

Once registration is complete, a generic project with a quota in the Ulm region should be created automatically, in line with the quota entitlement.

Deregistrierung vom Dienst bwCloud-OS Gen3

If you wish to deregister from the bwCloud-OS Gen3 service at a later date, you can do so here (Select service -> Registry Info -> Deregister):

When you deregister, all projects and resources (VMs, volumes, etc.) running on your account in bwCloud-OS Gen3 will be deleted.

Fee / Charge

As regards costs, you can use this tool to calculate how many booking units (BEH) VMs and volumes of the relevant size would cost:

To find out the current conversion rate from BEH to €, please contact the bwCloud-OS Co-ordination Office for the time being, via:

In future, however, this information is also to be made available on the University of Ulm’s intranet.
